Morning spin
just a little spinning this morning. Got bored with watching birthing shows, bad news, and wacked out history stuff on the TV’s so I focused on a spot in the carpet…It looked like a dot with an M under it. I wonder what that means…(yes, I know what the MDOT stands for, I just wonder why I was focusing on it, and why it stood out for me so much).
Did some good stretching after, hammies and quads feel much better now.

This is how we roll…
Logboom to Fremont on the BG…Did I mentioned I was looking for a flat ride today. My hammies and quads were still bugging from yesterday. So, where do you think we met up? Yup, you guessed it…Ladro…Today was a marvelous day! I think I could have pedaled my way to and fro without stopping. The hum of the wheels just kept singing.
I wonder if I should buy stock in Cafe Ladro…
Thank you

Here’s to 100 miles!
No, not at one time, not in a weekend, not in a week, but over the course of my “blogging life”. Yes, me, I’ve made it 100 miles…All this year, all since I started with Sweat365. To some of you, not a big deal, you do that in a weekend, or in a week, or in two weeks. To others, well, I’ll say that at one time if you asked me if I’d ever run 1 mile in my entire life I would have said, “nope, are you gonna eat that slice of pizza? Can you hand me the remote?”
I hate to say, “if I can do it, anyone can it”…But I will. If I can do it, anyone can do it. I won’t lie, it took an aweful lot of hard work, sweat, dedication and love and support from family and friends to get there, but, it is doable.
I can’t believe I’ve run 100 miles in my adult life.
WOW, Life’s Good!
Thank you!

Strider
30 Minutes - 3 miles, resistance 10 for 2 minutes, then 16 for 2 minutes for 25 minutes with a 5 min “cool down” at resistance 13 for 2.5 minutes, the 6 and jam it out for the last 2.5 minutes. Its fun to be back on the Strider again. Looking forward to building back up to where I was on it prior to the summer.
Note to self, unless you want to deal with 12 crazy 4th graders, get in/out of locker room by 12:55 or wait to go in there until 1:05.
Stopped at a local coffee place, got a yummy “protein plater” for lunch! and and iced coffee YUM!

SPIN
Its nice to get back into the gym and sweat, but its a total bummer to get back into the gym at sweat, (that means its getting too cold out to sweat outside).

Swim portion of Kirkland Tri Relay
I must say, mentally preparing for a race that is a relay is quite a bit different than prepping for a race that is your own. In a way it brought me back to my highschool days of “team sports” while over the course of the last summer I’ve been focused on “me” for race day and now all of a sudden I have to focus on “us”. It is something that I feel is difficult to train for. I’ve known for a long time now that I’d be doing this race as a relay, but how do you train for race day with a team? This is something that is new to me.
The “short” story is I had an absolute blast doing this tri as a relay. Our “bike” (Paul from the Y Tri Group) stepped in last minute as a fill in and I was really glad he was able to help out. He had an awesome ride. Our “run specialist” (Lisa) was up for her favorite distance and must have sprouted wings, she flew, and although I was a little beat up from a Mountain Bike “crash” this last week, I knew I was ready for the swim, (even though my shoulder might not have been).
I started my day like any other training day…Yup, you guessed it, at Cafe Ladro at O’Dark Hundred hours. I actually was in the door before they “officially” opened.
The nice thing about doing the Kirkland Triathlon is that its about 15 minutes from my front door to start line so I could leave a little early and make it there a little early.br />
I got to the race location quite a bit early, (if you knew me, you’d know that I could get there 2 hours early and I’d consider myself late. Anyway, I got there about 2 hours early). Found our transition area, and soaked up the scenery for awhile. I love race day.
Met up with Paul and gave him his packet and explained our locations…then bumped into Lisa and we all met up at our transition area. I got suited up and headed to the swim.
The unique thing about the swim at this Tri is that everyone MUST be counted, (literally hand on back by a “counter”) before you get in the water. So they had us file 1 by 1 into a “chute”. Finally, (about 20 minutes late), my wave was in the water ready for our start. 5 minute countdown.
One strange feeling I’ve not had to deal with in previous races is nerves. Everyone has asked me about butterflies and being nervous before my race, and honestly, I never had butterflies this bad in any other of my Tri’s. Probably because I feel that the only person I am racing against is myself, so what do I have to get nervous about. This one was different.
I’ve got people relying on me, waiting on me, counting on me and I’m alone.
So, the “gun” goes off and I remember my bubble, (thanks Shelley). I decided I’d start out on the outside and work my way into the inside as space opened up. I tend to swim very straight no matter where I am or whats around me and today was no different. I think I swam closer to the surf boards than the bouys…so I might have added a few meters to my swim. The first 100-200 meters are always the longest for me and seem to take twice as long as the rest of it. Before I knew it I could see the “swim out” rainbow and I was trying to focus on what I needed to do next…KICK
and…oh yes, run out of the swim and tag my bike partner….
All in all it was a really good swim for me. I was quite pleased.
Lisa and I chatted for awhile before her run while Paul was out on the bike. We spotted him coming towards us and coached him in.
They tagged off and Lisa sprinted out.
I hurried Paul out of his bike stuff because I knew Lisa was going to do about a 23 minute 5K and I didnt think we had much time to spare. Paul racked his bike and we headed to the finish.
22 minutes and fifty some odd seconds later we spotted Lisa coming into the finish. We met Lisa as she was getting her finishers medal and we “claimed” our own. I’ll tell you, the sweet taste of recieving a finishers medal makes the bitter taste of a DNF go away real quick.
All in all it was a great race day.
As for the Kirkland Triathlon…I’m not sure if I’ll ever do it as a solo event, but I’m real glad I did it as a relay. I had a fantastic day!
What’s next?

Black Diamond Olympic Tri Swim results (and psuedo race report)
Since we had decided to carpool and we were coming from different directions, what better place to meet (and keep tradition), than to meet at Cafe Ladro at O’Dark Hundred hours. Met Joel, Mitch and Shelley, packed the bikes, grabbed the usuals and off we went. My family was still asleep and all bundled up. My mood was easy going and the butterflies had not yet kicked in. It felt like it was going to be a good day.
The drive out to Black Diamond took just about an hour and was quite gorgeous. Over the rolling hills and seeing Mt Rainier in all of its glory was just the right way to kick off race day.
We arrived at the race in good spirits, cafinated, hydrated and ready to go. Went and got our packets, got body marked, and came back to the truck, checked our tires, (added air) and off we went.
My family showed up right on time at 8:30…It was good to see their smiling faces.
Off to get ready for a quick dip in the water warm up swim…
Sprinters went off and the excitement was growing. I was very comfortable with the place I had picked out to start from. Not too many folks and I could get a clear shot to the first bouy.
Thankfully I had swum the day before and was able to find my rythme quite quickly. I had remembered what Shelley told me once about picturing yourself encompassed in a bubble and no one will kick/punch/pull or swim on top of you, so I “inflated” by bubble right away.
It was a 2 loop swim…the first loop seemed to take forever and it took me everything I could do to not look at my watch. The second loop flew by.
As I came out of the water I spotted my family and that brought a huge smile to my face, even though I might not have been smiling on the outside. I was trying to figure out how to run up the hill and not look like a drunken sailor.
Apparently I had lost one of my ear plugs somewhere along the way so I was sloshing around, quite dizzy.
Made it up the hill and into transition. I decided to wear socks this go around and knew I wouldn’t be able to stand up to put them on so I sat, got ready chatted with Chrissy and my dad for a moment, then noticed Joel 2 racks down and said hello…
grabbed my bike and off I went through the (long) transition area. Found my way through the maze and out on the bike.
Something didnt sound quite right, but I knew, (or at least I thought I knew) everything should be fine. I looked down to see my rear tire had lost a significant amount of air, (I’m less than 1/2 mile from the park entrance).
So, while still dizzy from the swim, I hit the shoulder and removed the tire.
Got the tire off, the tube out, and heard, “peeeetteeerrrr” and looked up to see Mitch fly by me. I thought to myself “he had a great swim!” he wasn’t that far behind.
Grabbed my spare tube, stuck it in, got the tire back on and grabbed my CO2…couldn’t find the trigger I had practiced with so I used the trigger I had. Which, I had NO idea how to use. Got the trigger on, some CO2 in and then everything went haywire, the trigger popped off, froze the tube nipple which also popped off, and it was all over.
Pulled that tube out, got a new tube on, tire back on, found the trigger I had practiced with, grabbed 1 of my 2 remaining CO2 cartridges and went “OH SH!T, there’s no threads on the cartridge…Now what?” Last CO2, same thing, no threads. Grabbed the pump, (which I hadn’t practiced with), and figured, hey, its just a pump, it will go on no problem, and I’ll be fine.
30 minutes of struggling with the pump and no more bikers coming out of the park and I decided to walk it in.
A DNF for me today.
It was a very long drive home for me…much longer than the hour it actually took to drive. Every emotion raced through my body.
I know…I know…”That’s racin”…”On race day, it’s all up to the race gods”…”There are no such things as accidents”…”Sh!t happens”…I take some solice in all of those.
The DNF “pill” is about 3/4 of the way down the hatch now. I’ve allowed myself to let the emotions come through, and have learned from them, and learned from race day.
I plan to put this race on my calendar every year that I possibly can. It was a very well organized race. The location was gorgeous and I think the routes would have been cool.
I also take solice in what my son and a friend of mine said…
“Daddy - You didn’t finish, but you tried your best, and thats what its all about, right?”
and from a friend…
“At least you showed up and tried!! There are lots of folks who won’t ever bother to do that!”
and of course, the hugs, love, support, and words of wisdom from my beautiful and amazing wife! You’re truly amazing.
Thanks Dad and Lynne for coming and for your love and support as well. I’m glad you could at least see me swim and the wonderful weekend we had.
And thank you Joel, Shelley and Mitch for “agreeing” to do this race with me. I’m (not really) sorry I made ya do it! Thanks also for training with me for this one. I had a blast and learned a lot. Joel, thank you very much for all of the awesome coaching you provided! I really appreciate it!
So, with all of that being said…remember to check your CO2 cartridges before you head out and make sure you know how to work your triggers and pump.
What’s next? AH Yes! Kirkland this weekend! I’m SO looking forward to it!
